The state of a person’s home has been known to physiologically influence their behavior, emotions, and overall mental health. In this case, home and garden refers to the land and building where an individual or a family lives. The better balanced the environment, the better are the chances those who live there will also be balanced.

One way of thinking about your home and garden is the traditional way a master craftsperson operates a commercial workshop.

The Physical Infrastructure

The building and its contents in a traditional workshop had to be properly maintained and cared for, so that the activities of the workshop could proceed in a smooth and efficient manner. If it was neglected it would certainly interfere with the activities in the workshop resulting in breakdowns and interruptions in the work activities.

Think of the building that is your home as the physical workshop, and the impact on the family members who live there and depend on the infrastructure including tools and equipment to be in good working order. For example, broken kitchen appliances, no hot water for morning showers, a leaky roof or a backed up septic tank.

While not every emergency can be forseen, the concept of preventive maintenance which is a standard workshop proceedure is something you can adopt in your home and save yourself a lot of surprizes and costly repairs.

The Garden

Not everyone lives in a home that is situated on a plot of land that they oversee, like those who live in an apartment building for example. However in both cases, the garden can be present whether it is outdoors, or indoors of our own making with house plants.

In the best workshops in the world, the garden outside (land), and inside would never be a trash heap or neglected. Care and attention to presentation is clearly visible creating a sense of well-being for workshop personnel, and visitors alike.

Today, many new tech companies have adopted this traditional standard by creating garden campuses for their employees and visitors to experience a sense of well-being and reduce stress.

In your garden whether outdoors, indoors or both, when you intentionally practice integrating it with the physical infrastructure of your home as one and the same environment, you are practicing the way of craftsmanship, and improving your personal and family’s well-being.
